The first place you think of when thinking about Mexico is Mexico City, a captivating city with many sites to see any many things to do. This city is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, containing a staggering amount of 16 boroughs (a town or district that is an administrative unit).
However, with the amount of administrative units it has, it's still not enough to compensate for the amount of pollution the city caries. Mexico City is the 5th most polluted city in the world. Every year, rankings change and Mexico City has never left Top 10. Mexico has a variety of pollution problems, ranging from air pollution to water pollution. Day to Day AQI levels change in which people gamble with their lung health every time they step outside. Occasionally, people must wear masks to protect their lungs from the bad air quality caused the many old vehicles many citizens drive and the valley trapping all of those pollutants in. Water can be fatal in the city in which drinking the unfiltered tap can cause sickness and disease. The ground is even subsiding in the city, building up even more pollution that was already bad in the first place
As time goes by, the main problem of air pollution in the city gets worse and worse. Because Mexico City sits in a bowl-shaped valley that traps in air pollutants like mentioned, the city gains more concerns as time passes in which they know there is not much that can be done to clean the air in a safe and affordable manner. Many factors play into this rising problem as many people of the city continue to drive old cars and trucks that release almost twice the emissions than most gas using cars today. The Mexico City government gas played a role in this where they have put a bann on the use of cars once a week. However, this is only a small help in comparison to the amount of carbon oxides the 36,000 factories located in the city contribute to.
Have you ever heard someone say "This water tastes terrible," in reference to tap water in when you're in another country? In different places around the world, water actually does taste different because of the types of minerals that may be located there. In Mexico City's case, it's not the minerals. It's in fact the terrifying amount of pollution in the many bodies of water in the city. The city's poor management of the waste system and the carelessness of littering all contribute to this problem. In fact, some people may recommend that you not drink the tap water in which case if you do, you WILL get sick.
